Biography
Maria C. Swiman is Brazilian-born author, painter, chef, and former lawyer whose life and work reflect a deep commitment to resilience, justice, and the human spirit. Her creative and professional journey spans multiple fields including: law, visual arts, culinary arts, and writing, each shaped by a lifetime of rich experiences across cultures.
Born in Juiz de Fora, Brazil, Maria developed an early passion for storytelling, history, and the pursuit of justice. She earned a law degree in Brazil and began her career practicing law before later living and working in the United States, where she pursued several professions including sales, foreign currency exchange, culinary work as a chef, and adult caregiving. Her diverse career reflects both adaptability and a profound curiosity about people and the world around her.
Maria is also an accomplished painter whose artwork has been exhibited in Brazil and sold to collectors in both Brazil and the United States. Through painting, she explores emotion, memory, and personal expression, often drawing inspiration from the same themes that shape her writing.
Fluent in five languages Portuguese, Spanish, English, German, and Turkish—Maria’s life has been influenced by international experiences and cross-cultural connections.
At the heart of Maria’s story is an extraordinary personal journey. For decades she carried the emotional weight of having her biological daughter abducted and taken to the Middle East. Her debut book shares this deeply personal story through a narrative that blends lived experience with reflective storytelling. The work represents more than thirty years of perseverance, healing, and the determination to reclaim both truth and voice.
Maria is also a two-time cancer survivor, having overcome breast cancer and later metastatic cancer to the bone. These experiences further shaped her perspective on life, strengthening her appreciation for resilience, family, and the quiet strength found in everyday moments.
Today, Maria continues to write, paint, cook, and spend time with her family. She is the proud mother of two daughters and believes deeply in the importance of compassion, justice, and the power of storytelling to connect people through shared human experience.
Debut Book
Silence Across Three Continents – A life-inspired narrative based on Maria’s decades-long journey to reunite with her daughter after an international abduction to the Middle East. Written
in a faction style, the book blends real events with fictional storytelling to explore themes of justice, perseverance, motherhood, and emotional survival.
Thirty years in the making, the book reflects Maria’s personal search for truth, healing, and resilience.
About the Faction Style of This Book
This book is written in what is often called a “faction style”. Faction is a blend of fact and fiction. While the story is deeply inspired by real experiences and emotions from Maria C. Swiman’s life, it is not a strict documentary of events.
Some moments in the narrative reflect real memories, while others have been reshaped, combined, or imagined in order to create a coherent and meaningful story. Certain characters may represent aspects of several real individuals, and some situations have been adapted to protect privacy and allow the emotional truth of the story to be told with greater freedom.
Writing in this way allowed the author to step back from painful experiences and transform them into a narrative that speaks not only about personal history, but also about universal themes of love, loss, justice, resilience, and the enduring bond between a mother and her child.
The result is a story that exists between memory and imagination: inspired by real life, but shaped through the art of storytelling.
